Traditional Tonewood works in a region with one of the most abundant forests in Europe, the Austrian province of Styria. In this area, which is covered by forests at 75 percent, the harvesting of the primeval forest has only been finished in 1800, with some protected areas still in existence. About 30% of the existing forests consist in so-called primary wood, i.e. the first natural grown trees after harvesting the primeval forest. These trees are genetically very old, not cultivated an extremly precious for our purpose. This population is now at least 200 years old and consists at a high percentage of the so called bear-claw-firs, making them highly desirable for the construction of string instruments.
